Memory Care Resources for Veterans

Alzheimer’s disease can be devastating for both seniors and their loved ones. While the news can be overwhelming, receiving the correct diagnosis is also the first step in receiving the correct care. New and innovative treatments, ranging from therapies to medications, are constantly being developed to improve the quality of life of those living with memory impairment.

Understanding the disease and receiving the appropriate treatment as soon as possible is the most effective way to ensure that patients live the best lives possible.

Dementia is the general term for memory loss and cognitive decline, and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia among older adults. In America, one in every nine adults over the age of 64 has the disease, and that number rises to one in every three once adults reach the age of 85. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease in which symptoms appear slowly and gradually worsen over time, eventually becoming severe enough to interfere with daily activities.

Dementia is frequently discussed in stages by medical professionals. These stages describe how far dementia has progressed and what symptoms to expect. Having these clearly defined stages allows caregivers to better understand where their loved one stands with the disease and determine the best course of treatment.

Generally, dementia is defined in three stages – early, middle, and late.
