Pizza, while Italian in nature, has become an American staple. Whether it is deep-dish, thin crust, New York or Chicago style, one thing is certain: Americans love their pizza. In fact, approximately 3 billion pizzas are sold in the U.S. each year.
But what’s better than eating pizza? How about eating pizza and supporting our troops at the same time?
Pizzas 4 Patriots, a nonprofit organization that serves pizza to our military service members, is on a mission to provide America’s favorite food to those protecting our country all across the world.
“Our mission is to comfort active service members, first responders and veterans by providing America’s favorite food while they’re far away from home,” the organization’s web site says. “Whether it be fighting on the front lines, providing humanitarian relief, or recovering in a veteran’s facility.”
The organization began in 2008 when Master Sgt. Mark Evans, or Sergeant Pizza as he is known, and his teenage son conceptualized Operation Slice of Home, which shipped pizzas to our troops overseas on Independence Day. Since then, Pizzas 4 Patriots has shipped more than 160,000 pizzas, feeding more than 650,000 soldiers, veterans and first responders around the globe.
Dedicated to providing the freshest and best ingredients on their pizzas, Pizzas 4 Patriots makes their pizzas fresh and then flash freezes them immediately to be shipped.
“The pizza’s long journey begins on a truck, then by plane, to a military convoy, and is occasionally escorted by tanks, helicopters or other transportation as available until it finally reaches a forward operating military base far overseas, in the middle of an active war zone, many hours later,” the web site says.
